Exciting silkworm development…

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that after waiting all week for some action from the silkworms in the classroom, I woke this morning to notice that some of the silkworms were shedding their skin. Have a look at the photos below! I’ve circled in blue, the layers of skin that have been shed. In the photo with the blue arrow, the skin is still attached to the end of the silkworm. I have collected some skin in a container so that I can show you on Monday.

Then, when I was cleaning out their box and feeding them this evening, I noticed some small strands of silk in the box. It is very exciting! Some of them are ready to spin their cocoon. I have put some egg cartons and a toilet roll in the corner of the box and already I’ve noticed them leaving their mulberry leaves to find a comfortable place to start spinning.

I can’t wait to show you all on Monday. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
